Overview
In recent years, the major part of bicycle traffic development went through structural changes, which were based on research of combined effects of the economic, social and transport policy measures.
The aim of the project was to propose measures improving the cycling transport in the city of Budapest.
Results
The bicycle transport between Budapest and the region with use of both means the seven-day public transport and the bicycle. The average bicycle use is more than doubled in comparison with its level 10 years ago (1% increase in the bicycle use within the modal split).
The results of the research are presented in two groups. The first type consists of comprehensive, specific location that cannot be served by other transport mode. This type is called “horizontal development”. The second group shows other physical improvements of infrastructure.
- Horizontal development proposals
Shaping the new tariff system matching the needs
Support for cycling to work by employers or introducing tax reductions
Incentive Campaigns
Development of a new bicycle design methodology
Shaping the new tariff system matching the needs
The bicycle is not typical inter-city transport mode due to technical parameters of the bicycle, cycling abilities, etc. If you want to increase the proportion of bicycle transport, combined with the increase in travel, you need to use the positive discrimination, which should be identified:
- the specifics of potential cyclists,
- the specifics of the travel process (travel time, distance);
- opportunities for enhancing attractiveness of the tariff system.
The highly integrated ticketing system is essential, as well as interoperability, both within the city limits and the different modes.
Cycling supported by employers or by introducing tax reductions
Support for commuting by bike in Irish and English models became a potential tool in particular to encourage regional commuting. The employers supporting cycling benefit from additional positives.
Continue promotion campaigns
Many successful campaigns are known in the cycling region of Budapest, in means of good organisation of cycling and its promotion.
The campaigns should emphasise the advantages and benefits of cycling, they should provide information to the public and communicate that biking is practical.
Validation of new bicycle design methodology
Efforts and economic opportunities as a result of the deterioration in recent years greatly increased the demand for cycling and everyday use of bicycles. Up to the present, the bicycle traffic planning along the river has technical specifications, but it has become obsolete because the bike has to satisfy the daily travel demand and has to use more corridors.
The strategic planning means the inclusion of cycling as a self-mode and its integration to traffic models and planning.
2. Physical development of infrastructure
There is a further need to pay attention to bicycle paths completion, bike routes maintenance, innovations, B+R parking places, bike-friendly design of transport nodes in order to develop cycling-friendly infrastructure and to ensure the network continuity.
Innovation aspects
Proposal of measurement supporting the use of bicycle in the city.
Policy objectives
Support of the sustainable transport mode - cycling.
