Overview
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are of special importance for the German economy. They are often highly specialized, important partners in innovation and value chains and drivers of technological progress. With respect to electromobility, SME-driven innovations can help to expand the role of Germany as a leading provider. In particular, the battery systems, which play an important role for electromobility, offer opportunities for SMEs to open up new market segments. The thermal state of vehicle batteries has a direct impact on their performance, reliability and long-term stability. The range of e-vehicles and customer satisfaction are directly dependent on this. Local overheating of battery components, known as "hot spots," represent typical causes of technical problems with battery systems.
The project aims at implementing a comprehensive and holistic design tool as well as an online diagnostic system for the detection and avoidance of "hot spots" of battery components.
With the help of the project results it will be possible to develop technically robust and reliable battery systems. Due to further developments of the results of the project towards simulation and design software, the findings are incorporated into product development processes and thus directly into electric vehicles.
The project investigates new field-based simulation methods for battery systems as well as an innovative method that indirectly measures cell temperatures and detects cell defects with thermal effects.
