Overview
The Action’s overall objective is to foster the implementation of e-Freight so as to simplify and reduce the cost of exchanging information between different actors and transport modes along the chain, leading to a more efficient, less polluting freight transport, and facilitating the use of multimodal freight transport solutions. Achieving paperless and seamless information flows along the whole transport logistics chain (involving shippers, freight forwarders, transport carriers, network managers as well as authorities) is a key objective for both the freight transport sector and the EU. The Action, including studies and real-life pilot deployments, is implemented in core ports in Italy, Poland and Portugal along with three core network corridors (Atlantic, Mediterranean and Baltic – Adriatic).
To deliver on the overall objective of the Action, there are two specific objectives, which will be met by carrying out eight defined activities within the Action. The proposed Action aims at implementing market-ready pilot applications of e-Freight standards and technological infrastructures along 3 corridors of the TEN-T Core Network: the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Baltic / Adriatic corridors.
The project will develop concrete business cases where logistics stakeholders (shippers, logistic services providers and authorities) benefit from implementation of the e-Freight policy, in terms of:
- Improved efficiency, by sharing planning and execution data to synchronize inter-modal transport and to optimize loading;
- Reduced costs, by automating data exchange between different stakeholders’ systems, including customs and administrations;
- Increased business, by maximizing utilization of the infrastructures, vehicles and logistics resources along the target corridors. The business cases will act as forerunners for market adoption and full-scale deployment of e-Freight on European and international scale, producing:
- Applied e-Freight solutions demonstrating concrete benefits in industrial implementations, involving regular cargo flows and operational processes;
- Studies assessing the economic viability of e-Freight solutions on the individual stakeholders, on corridor level, and across different corridors of the Core Network;
- Guidelines and requirements for migrating to e-Freight from current systems and architectures, shared and consistent with e-Freight initiatives carried out on European level.
