Overview

Background & Policy context

The German Maritime Strategy 2025 offers two maritime programmes to support the national research community as well as the industry for ship-building and marine technologies. Project Management Jülich (Forschungszentrum Jülich) coordinates both programmes on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). International sea trade is an important issue for the German economy. Ensuring civilian maritime security in terms of safety as well as security plays a major role.

Strategic Objectives

Objectives of the programme are as follows:

The aim of the funding is the development of innovative real-time technologies to increase civilian maritime safety in the areas of safety and security. Real-time maritime security systems can help to identify threats early. Therefore, research and development in the field of e-navigation, the creation and interpretation of situational awareness, the development of assistance systems for future autonomous shipping, cyber-security as well as navigation solutions for efficient and safe route guidance are all important.

Some of the most significant applications include:

  • Protection of maritime infrastructures and the people employed there
  • Monitoring of maritime areas to prevent illegal activities
  • Protection and security of the global supply chain
  • Safety of maritime transport systems as well as seafarers and passengers
  • Marine environmental protection through observation and prevention of accidents
  • Observation of sea areas and the infrastructure there
  • Multi-sensor data fusion and integrated situational awareness
  • Service-based assistance systems and integrated transport management
  • Online condition monitoring of ships and maritime structures for remote maintenance and intervention
