Overview
The Swedish Road Administration is the central administrative agency commissioned with the overall responsibility (sectoral responsibility) for the entire road transportation system. Within the framework of its sectoral responsibility, the Road Administration is to assume a leading role in promoting and supporting the work of the other players involved in the road sector. It shall also actively strive to fulfil the goals contained in national transport policy, focusing particularly on accessibility, high transport quality, safe traffic, a sound environment and positive regional development.
This sectoral responsibility involves representing the State at a national level in issues relating to the environmental impact of the road transport system, road traffic safety, accessibility, level of service, efficiency and contributions to regional balance, as well as in issues relating to intelligent transport systems, vehicles, public transport, modifications for the disabled, commercial traffic in addition to applied research, development and demonstration activities within the road transport system.
The overall aims and objectives of the operations give cause to set down the Administration's approach to certain prioritised areas in policy documents. At present, these areas are road safety, the environment, disabled persons' issues, information, personnel, safety and security and total quality.
The policy documents, the content of which is decided upon by either the Board of Directors or the Director-General, apply throughout the entire organisation. The board sets the policy within the Administration's external areas of the operation.
The Swedish Road Administration works within the framework of current political decisions, the funds available and the regulations governing its operations.
Funding
The Swedish Road Administration's research and development programme have a budget on approximately SEK 200 million per year.
