Overview
Kværner Shipbuilding Division's shipyards are building a wide range of different ship types. The vessel concepts greatly differ from each other in term of payload, type, size, speed, construction material, service profile and endurance. Therefore it means that the machinery installations are also accordingly different and applied to the general ship design concept in question.
The general trend in ship powering and prime mover installations favours standardised and modularised constructions and building methods. The intention is to reduce the installation and outfitting working hours in total and especially on-board after launching. The shipyards are reducing their labour force. An efficient use of subcontractors is a vital requirement. Space saving and weight reduction in machinery has a positive impact on building cost and operation.
For ship operators is important that the machinery installations meet the performance figures of competitor ships. Easy maintenance and reliable operation during a ship's life cycle are essential to achieve profitability.
The project will be a part of Kværner's Ship R3D program and will be linked to the other activities, which are ongoing within this framework.
To develop machinery solutions and arrangements for new ship concepts, which are technically advanced, environmentally friendly and cost effective. Further, to find and develop common design practices and tools to give cost reduction for both participating shipyards and customers, and to efficiently use new technology at the Kværner shipyards.
In addition, the objective is to combine efforts with partner companies in developing new machinery components and systems.
The goal is to increase thermal efficiency and reduce the weight of the machinery systems significantly. The following goals are defined:
- Emissions to air Reduced by 50% Weight of Propulsion Machinery Reduced by 20%
- Thermal Efficiency Higher than 50% Daily Operating Costs Reduced by 10%
The project is separated in three main phases, whereof phase 1 covers Machinery Arrangement and Applications. In this phase design guidelines and targets applied for different ship types and machineries will be established. This will be used as input for machinery comparison and design development. Total life cycle costs will be included in the evaluation, and the obligations and regulations affecting on design solutions and operations will be evaluated. The overall goal is a reduction of total life cycle cost of 10% for the analysed ships. Kværner Masa Yard is part responsible for this phase.
Phase 2 of the project covers Emission Reduction and Combustion. This phase covers development of machinery components and prime powers making it possible to reduce emissions and increase the thermal efficiency significantly. Hot combustion machinery, combine cycle arrangements and other advanced machinery arrangement solutions will be developed for different ship concepts. Wärtsilä NSD is part responsible for this phase.
Phase 3 of the project covers Propulsion and Control. In this phase advanced diesel electric propulsion systems combined with podded drives will be developed. Focus will be given on increased total efficiency and reliability. ABB is part responsible for this phase.
