Overview

Background & Policy context

In order to address the major challenges of cities, the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe was launched in 2010 with the ambition to rethink and manage the increasing urban orientation and concentration in Europe. Europe’s competitiveness depends greatly on its cities and metropolitan regions, where enterprises can benefit from agglomeration economies and networks linking regional, national and global market places. That is why JPI Urban Europe aims to create and exploit synergy in an urbanised Europe from an economic, social, environmental and transport-related perspective.

The Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA) represents the long-term strategy and programme for JPI Urban Europe during 2014-2020. It will include priorities, actions, instruments, resources, and an implementation timeline.

Strategic Objectives

JPI UE addresses the entire urban field to make better use of European public Research, Development and Innovation resources. The aim is to coordinate research and make better use of Europe’s public funds in order to:

  • Transform urban areas to centres of innovation and technology;
  • Realise eco-friendly and intelligent intra- en interurban transport and logistic systems;
  • Ensure social cohesion and integration;
  • Reduce the ecological footprint and enhance climate neutrality.
Programme organisation

Joint Programming Initiative focusses on grand challenges that face Europe as well as the rest of the world.
