Overview
Fully autonomous ships are anticipated in the distant future, and the elements of the concept are already being developed by innovative technology companies and research organisations. Smart ships with improved connectivity and reduced manning offer an intermediate step on the way to fully autonomous ships. But is the technology running ahead of practical considerations, and is the Achilles’ heel the inability to guarantee software security?
In this Workshop on “The Connected Ship and Shipping” presentations will be given on two autonomous ship projects, the regulatory framework for unmanned ships, sea traffic management, and maritime cyber security. These presentations will help identify future innovation, security, and regulatory needs, as well as research and development priorities for Smart and Autonomous ships and shipping.
The participants of this workshop will include the European Commission, Maritime Industry and Associations, Classification Societies, Research Organisations, Universities and Institutes, and WATERBORNETP Support and Mirror Groups.
