Overview
Efficient traffic is the backbone of the European economy. However, increases in freight and passenger traffic is pushing the infrastructure to its limits. Great expectations are laid on links between telecommunications and informatics with a view to making the most 'intelligent' use of the road network. However, how can intelligent transport systems really contribute to reducing congestion, accidents and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as ensuring the best use and interconnection between the various transport modes? The directive on the deployment of intelligent transport systems in Europe, which is soon to be passed, as well as further planned action by the European Commission, provides an opportunity to take stock and have a future-oriented discussion.
