In the teeth of recession, the railway sector has remained strong with the help of continued government investments. Worldwide demand for rail equipment and services is now predicted to rise by 20% in the next four years to €170bn a year. By 2017, three quarters of all spending on railway equipment worldwide, €124bn worth of annual contracts, is expected to be open to competitive tendering.
