Overview

The “Caminos de Hierro” Foundation, the Polythechnic University of Madrid, Oficemen, IECA, INGECIBER, and the Spanish Railways Foundation have developed the ARTIBAL research project. This is a pioneering development that addresses the technical feasibility study and initial application of the development of a new artificial granular material, which might be able to replace the natural ballast and improve the functional characteristics of this layer.

The project objectives are:
- The development of a new artificial granular material, applicable for railway infrastructure that can replace natural ballast and improve the functional characteristics of the layer.
- Find an alternative and intermediate solution between natural ballasted track and slab track, enhancing the qualities of the ballast (granular) and the slab track (controlled design and materials).

Along with the presentation of the results of the project, this event aims to be a meeting point and discussion of innovative materials in the field of railway infrastructure, addressing key issues with vision.

ARTIBAL Project was developed under the National Public-Private Cooperation Program, Subprogram of transport and infrastructure projects, within the instrumental line of new materials for railway infrastructure, under the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation, 2008-2011.
