Driverless U-Bahn trains proposed for Vienna

ANNOUNCEMENT

Wiener Linien’s proposal for a fully automated metro line is due for completion in 2023 and is thought to improve overall customer service, punctuality and improve safety through platform screen doors.
A Europe-wide tender process for 45 new trains and future maintenance agreement will be announced shortly. The new trains will replace the existing Silberpfeil or ‘silver arrow’ fleet and bolster existing numbers in order to cope with demand. Once introduced on Line U5, the fully automatic vehicles will also enter service on lines U1 to U4 but with driver assistance.
Infrastructure Minister Alois Stoeger highlighted the growing demand on Vienna’s public transport network and stressed the importance of investing in new technologies to improve the comfort and safety of all passengers.
