On 13 June 2014, the European Commission released an analysis of the current situation of multimodal travel planners across Europe and its plans for the way forward. The Commission Staff Working Document “Towards a roadmap for delivering EU-wide multimodal travel information, planning and ticketing services”, highlights the EU’s renewed efforts to develop Europe-wide all-in-one journey planners, making it easier to plan and book cross-border journeys that involve several means of transport.
More than a hundred multimodal journey planners already exist in Europe. However, only very rarely do they offer multimodal and cross-border information. The Commission’s objective is not to deliver the services itself, but rather, the EC’s efforts are devised to bring down barriers, make sure that appropriate tools are available across the EU, and to encourage their use.
The Commission will lead the cooperation between the various actors involved and will provide funding opportunities under the Connecting Europe Facility and Horizon2020 funding programmes.
