European Commission welcomes revised Regulation for a sustainable and resilient transport network

The European Commission has welcomed the final adoption of the Regulation supporting the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) by the European Parliament and the Council. The Regulation includes strong incentives to promote more sustainable transport modes, enhance digitalisation, and improve multimodality.

The Regulation includes a target to deploy a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) which will serve as the single European signaling system to enhance rail safety and efficiency. The Regulation also sets out plans to improve airport connectivity; airports handling over 12 million passengers annually must be connected by long-distance rail, boosting the competitiveness of rail over domestic flights.

The Regulation includes enhanced governance measures in order to ensure timely completion by 2030 for the core network, 2040 for the extended core network, and 2050 for the comprehensive network.
