Horizon Europe: EUR 188 million available to fund new clean mobility research projects

Date of publication:

Summary

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has launched a major Horizon Europe call for proposals offering €188 million in EU funding for clean mobility research projects. With a submission deadline of 20 January 2026, this call represents a significant investment in advancing Europe's transport sector transformation towards climate neutrality by 2050. This funding opportunity aligns with the European Commission's strategic priorities under the European Green Deal, the Net-Zero Industry Act, and the Clean Industrial Deal.

  • The call covers three Destinations and 16 topics addressing critical challenges in clean mobility: Cross-sectoral solutions for the climate transition (Destination 2 with 4 topics), Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes (Destination 5 with 1 topic), and Safe, Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods (Destination 6 with 11 topics).
  • Destination 2 focuses on cross-sectoral solutions including development of sustainable batteries with efficient manufacturing processes, integration of advanced materials for high-performance mobility batteries, accelerated testing for battery safety evaluation, and monitoring of the Societal Readiness Pilot programme.
  • Destination 5 addresses real-time monitoring of regulated and non-regulated emissions from vessels and port activities to enforce emission limits in waterfront cities, supporting cleaner maritime transport.
  • Destination 6 encompasses a comprehensive range of topics including next-generation environment perception for Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility operations, integration of human driving behaviour in validation systems, Edge-AI building blocks, federated data exchange platforms, innovative construction and maintenance for resilient transport infrastructure, freight transport and logistics digital innovation, multimodal transport emissions measurement, inland waterway integration, safety of vulnerable road users, AI-based crash prediction, and icing challenges in sustainable aviation.
  • Projects funded under this call will advance key technologies and solutions across all transport modes, contributing to the EU's Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy goal of reducing transport emissions by 90% by 2050.

This funding call is strategically positioned to accelerate transport research and innovation across multiple critical areas. The topics address the full spectrum of transport challenges, from developing advanced battery technologies that will power zero-emission vehicles to creating intelligent transport systems that enhance safety and efficiency. The emphasis on Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility technologies will drive the deployment of next-generation transport solutions whilst ensuring human-centric design and safety validation.
