ANNOUNCEMENT
The European Parliament and the Council found an agreement to establish response centres for managing the 112 eCalls, a system that automatically dials the EU emergency number (112) in the event of serious accidents.
The system’s relevance can be explained through some figures: the eCall is estimated to speed emergency response times up to 40% in urban areas and 50% in the countryside, reduce fatalities by at least 4% and the number of severe injuries by 6%. Vice-President Kallas welcomed the deal as a necessary step for safer European transport.
