The new Batteries Regulation was introduced in August 2023, aligning with the circular economy objectives of the European Green Deal. The law will ensure that batteries are collected, reused and recycled in Europe. With demand for batteries increasing rapidly, there is a growing need to minimise their environmental impact and increase the security of supply for raw materials and energy. This new law aims to address these issues by adopting a full life-cycle approach regarding sourcing, manufacturing, use and recycling of batteries.
Specific targets for recycling efficiency, material recovery and recycled content will be introduced gradually from 2025 onwards, ensuring valuable materials are recovered at their end of their useful life.
