Overview
The Austrian Research Center (ARC) is the largest application-oriented information enterprise in the country, which designs products and processes - from drafting to development and testing to industrial applications. For mutual benefit, for the exchange of competence and know-how.
The centre participates in several research topics, however some are related to transport.
As of 2009, the name was changed to “Austrian Institue of Technology" (AIT).
The aim of Austrian Research Centers for transport related topics are:
- to offer comprehensive expertise in this field and to contribute to the constant improvement of this knowledge
- to work as an interface between science and economy
- to improve networks to international research
Several projects focus on pavement management/road monitoring particularly on measuring of road surface characteristics (skid resistance, texture, roughness longitudinal and evenness cross-profile) and product examination required to receive the Austrian quality label.
Another impressive project is the climatic wind tunnel in Vienna. The new testing facility consists of two separate climatic wind tunnels for the testing of vehicles under extreme weather conditions. What sets it apart from other facilities are its sheer dimensions - the larger tunnel is 100 metres long, the smaller one 31 metres. Temperatures from minus 50 C to plus 60 C, wind speeds of up to 300 km/h can be simulated.
