Strategic Objectives

The Train command-control sub-programme aimed to contribute to the following: more scheduled, safer and cheaper guided public transport; an increased capacity of nodes and heavily loaded rail lines; better informed passengers and freight users and facilitation of trips through Europe.

Programme organisation

The group focuses on different train command-control systems, whether inter-city (high speed lines or ordinary lines) or urban/suburban (automatic or conventional metro/underground railway, tramway).

The group particularly looked into the completion of the ASCOT programme (Automatisme de Sécurité et Systèmes de Contrôle-commande dans les Transports guidés - automation of safety and command-control systems in guided transport) and the follow-up of the European ERTMS/ETCS programme (European Rail Traffic Management System / European Train Control System). The work covered the following:

- comparison of safety methods in rail and air fields;
- simulation models for the operation of complex nodes;
- application of ERTMS developments to urban areas.
