Overview

Background & Policy context

For the FRP bridge deck system ASSET, the shear and compression stiffness as well as the shear and compression resistance in the deck plane will be investigated. These parameters will allow for the dimensioning and construction of two adhesively bonded composite girders with 7.50 m span. The girders will be subjected to static and fatigue experiments.

Objectives

The project AGB2002/025 represents an extension of project AGB2001/479. The test procedure for FRP bridge decks as well as the dimensioning method for adhesively bonded composite girders, both developed in project AGB2001/479, are beeing verified by means of a second FRP bridge deck system (Asset system).

Methodology

Analytical and numerical modeling, laboratory experiments.

Results

Main goal is to draw up a design proposal for bonded joints between FRP pavement slabs and steel beams.

With regard to construction and application it was found that the methods used for the test vehicle can not be transferred unchanged to the practice and require additional development steps. Regarding concept proposal for temporary bridges, it has been found that the original idea - to develop a reusable bridge system - does not meet the needs.
