On-the-fly location referencing is a key technology for many future applications in the fast developing world of telematics and multimedia, in the first place for traffic information services and traffic management applications (on both the data collection and distribution sides), but also for the emergency and other position dependent services that are a centre of current attention.

Digital map databases play a vital role in most traffic telematics applications. In the chain of creating, providing and using traffic and related information, a traffic message is created in the sending system and transmitted and used in the receiving system. The traffic information in the message is related to a location and this location is refere

The AGORA project's key objectives are to:

  • adapt and implement this leading-edge technology and bring it from the laboratory environment to real telematics applications;
  • test and validate the reliability of this method on a trial site in Hannover, establishing and Urban Design Observatory (UDO) in each European city for study (i.e. Barcelona, London, Malmö and Utrecht);
  • disseminate and transfer this technology for wide-spread adoption/implementation.

AGORA was implementing the audit methodology by establishing an Urban Design Observatory (UDO) in each European city for study (i.e. Barcelona, London, Malmö and Utrecht); the vehicle for the gathering, analysing and discussion of research data; (and the disseminator of information for user participation through the Urban Design Interface) . AGORA was studying the designated Capital Routes in each city, how these routes function and how they are currently being used by gathering socio-economic data on them. This will include ethnographic analysis and the participation of end-users.

Results

  • Develop a test a pan-European audit methodology to analyse human activity in European urban spaces and to identify best practice model for urban;
  • s
    tudy of the transferability and applicability of best practice model;
  • d
    evelop design proposals illustrated how the research methodology can be responsive to the specific needs of individual cities across Europe and can contribute to improving the quality of urban life in Europe.

AGORA was using further develop space syntax methodologies and integrate live data with GIS to model the changes in use of space by citizens in city districts and urban corridors. Modifications within space, such as the introduction of new lighting schemes, were tested, piloted and modelled within computer environments. The project  investigated how space and movement interact with other characteristics of the urban environment.  'Soft' design modification strategies to improve cityscape and socio-economic utilisation of space.

Policy implications

AGORA aim was to develop and test a unique pan-European audit methodology that may contribute to develop a better understanding of the ways in which planning, design.

The AGORA project has successfully developed a map based, on-the-fly location referencing method. The method has been validated to have a hit-rate higher than 95%.
