Background & policy context: 

When monolithic parts are machined, mono-fraction kindling often contaminated with cooling lubricant is produced. At present the pieces of kindling is collected, sorted and sold to various distributors. There the chips usually get mixed up with other alloys and therefore a down-cycling-process is being initiated. Furthermore, the daily market and customers dominate distributors´ transport logistics rather than ecological considerations.


The aim of this project is to create an innovative logistics and transportation concept for the valuable secondary raw materials of the machining industry. This includes in-house concepts for collecting the valuable secondary raw material from the machining process as well as efficient warehouse logistics. Moreover, an efficient coordination with secondary raw material recyclers and specialized transport companies provides a comprehensive concept for optimized freight mobility. The smart planning of the machining process and a holistic view on different storage positions of the participating parties, lead to individual concepts for designing new production facilities which focus on sustainability of secondary raw material handling. In addition to the optimized material flow within companies with machining operations the freight transport system is relieved due to coordination of producer, transit companies and melting facilities in a unique way, since the high volume-to-mass-ratio chips are shipped directly to the recycler without intermediate storage. Finally, the new logistic concept provides major environmental benefits. When mono-fraction or compatible scraps can be used directly in the iron works avoiding the down-cycling or the need for dilution and additional alloying.
