Overview
Background & Policy context
A great number of the existent level crossings in the 5000 km railway network cannot be replaced by non-level crossings for economic reasons and for maintaining proportionality.
Actually solutions for level crossing protection have been developed which respect the limited financial means and try to optimise the impact on road traffic flow. Basic structures which respect all aspects do not exist. The research wants to fill this gap.
Objectives
The aim is to develop basic structure and create a standard.

Results
The project final report has following conclusions:
- At intersections of roads with rail-bound vehicles, the implementation of a project depends on the operating mode of the rail vehicle. A distinction is made according to SN 671 512 basically, according to the operating modes "drive and view" (tram operation) and "Driving for signals" (rail operation).
- With "drive and view" The general traffic rules to SVG. The signaling, consisting of signals and markings, is one of the principal means by which road users to guide to proper behavior. The unique, clearly identifiable signaling makes a significant contribution to road safety. In this context, the signalisation of intersections rail / road occupies a special position.
