Project's principal goal was to set up Centre of Excellence "TRANSMEC", The Centre should initiate and strengthen international co-operation in railway wheel sets issues research and education. Adopted measures have made the integration of the Polish research centres into the European Research Area easier (strategic target).  

The TRANSMEC Centre of Excellence was intended to focus on doing research/education work related to rail transport, and in particular to wheel sets issues. It was propose to strengthen existing and establish new contacts the leading universities and research centres abroad. Some of proposed activities were:

  • international scientific and educational co-operation;
  • organising conferences and workshops;
  • participating in joint European research projects;
  • disseminating research results;
  • enabling flow of information between research centres from NAS and EU;
  • promoting new research management methods;
  • providing more attractive educational opportunities (post-graduate studies and training courses for industry workers and junior scientists);
  • developing new teaching/research procedures;
  • supporting and promoting participation of industrial companies and SMEs in international research projects;
  • harmonising NAS regulations on railway wheel sets with EU standards;
  • dissemination of information on the Centre.

Primary objectives of the proposal were:

  1. Net-working the Centre and other NAS research institutions with the best research centres in Europe;
  2. Contributing to more sustained development of TRANSMEC Centre in basic research, education and applied research;
  3. Increasing Centre's participation in European research programmes;
  4. Strengthening of Centre's potential as a partner for Polish industry and small and medium enterprises;
  5. Developing post-graduate studies in the Centre and expanding teaching potential in general;
  6. Easing the flow of information on research projects and possible funding and educational opportunities;
  7. Disseminating of newest research results and procedures;
  8. Supporting market-oriented research.

The Centre of Excellence has been established and it has played an important role in initiating and strengthening international co-operation within scope of European Research Area since.
