Overview

Background & policy context:

ECCOMAS is an organisation grouping European Associations with interests in the development and applications of computational methods in science and technology.

ECCOMAS was created in 1993 with the aim of fostering basic and applied research and dissemination of activities in Europe in the field of Computational Methods in Applied Sciences.

ECCOMAS Council is formed by official representatives of National or Regional Scientific Societies or Organizations covering most of the European countries. Its main mission is to favour the exchange of information, and to promote the transfer between Research and Industry at the European scale. Its fields of interest are the applications of Mathematical and Computational Methods and Modelling to major areas such as Fluid Dynamics, Structural Mechanics, Semi-conductor Modelling or Electro-magnetics. Multidisciplinary applications of these fields to critical societal and technological problems encountered in sectors like Aerospace, Car and Ship Industry, Electronics, Energy, Finance, Chemistry, Medicine, Biosciences, Environmental sciences are of particular interest.

The main event organised by ECCOMAS was a large European conference which takes place on a four year cycle and addresses scientists and engineers both in and outside Europe. The main objective of these conferences is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of state-of-the-art in scientific computing applied to engineering sciences. Equal emphasis is given to basic methodologies, scientific development and industrial applications.

Objectives:

The objective of this specific support action was to take the opportunity of the IV European Congress in Computational Method in Engineering and Applied Sciences to be held in Jyväskylä on 24-28 July 2004 (ECCOMAS 2004) to promote and increase awareness in the outputs and on-going developments carried out in RTD projects within the V and VI Framework Programmes in the field of computational engineering and science.

Methodology:

New joint activities between university and industry in this field were envisaged also to be promoted. More specifically the action intended to make use of the ECCOMAS Congress and Exhibition to foster the exchange of information on RTD outputs and development from ongoing and finished RTD projects between the research community and industrial users interested in the application of computational methods for solving practical problems in science and engineering.

Particular effort were put in the interchange of experiences between academic and industry through the ECCOMAS Exhibition and Congress. This event was considered as the starting point for many joint RTD activities and ventures between research groups and industry, particularly SME companies, interested in the use and development of computer based simulation method for enhanced design and productivity.
