Overview

Background & policy context:

This Action is part of a wider programme aiming at fostering the use of LNG as alternative fuel in the maritime sector. This wider programme supports the development of LNG refuelling stations in Spanish ports, being it through fixed infrastructure or bunkering barges and the LNG fitment of vessels.

Objectives:

This Action aims at building an LNG bunkering barge in the port of Barcelona.

The LNG bunker barge will be able to refuel large LNG-powered vessels (such as container and cruise vessels).

It will therefore ensure that LNG-fuelled ships can refuel in Barcelona, thus creating an intermediate well-located LNG bunkering point in the Mediterranean.

In addition, the Action will provide a cost-efficient LNG refuelling solution attractive for final customers. In turn, this will boost the demand and provide new opportunities for the LNG sector in the EU. It is expected that the Action will create or maintain at least 100 jobs in a European shipyard.
