Overview

Background & Policy context

The Naviki project aims at promoting cycling in European cities and touristic areas by rolling out a European internet platform for navigation, communication and planning in the field of cycling. Thus it intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to promote a less car-dependent lifestyle by making the bicycle an even more attractive means of transport. Naviki addresses a range of national, topical and demographic target groups, from individual users (cyclists, motorists, tourists) to municipalities, corporations and organisations.

Objectives

In Naviki any cyclist will be able to discover the best cycle paths all over Europe and to publish them online. Official partners can specifically indicate paths with a certified quality standard. With the help of Naviki partners like municipalities, regions, touristic associations and many others are able to offer their users and citizen a special service, to inform and communicate in a modern way and to make their location more attractive to cyclists. Cities or organisations interested in using the Naviki navigation platform in their regions are invited to contact the project coordinator to receive more information.

Methodology

The Naviki project will implement a Europe-wide Internet platform for navigation, communication and planning in the field of cycling. This new webportal offers many functions that make cycling even more attractive and thus helps contributing to energy saving and eco-friendliness: With the aid of a tailor-made Service (Naviki Landingpage), local authorities, tourism organisations and other stakeholders gain many benefits, including the following:

  • Naviki will guide local residents and visitors along particularly attractive or practical cycling routes
  • Stakeholders can simply equip Naviki with their own specific image – thus making Naviki an ideal complement to their own website.
  • Naviki enables efficient, decentralised administration and quality assurance through the local authorities or tourism organisations. Naviki offers new options in public relations for cycling by interaction with cyclists themselves
  • The system enriches planning for cycle traffic involving user-generated information on cycling infrastructure.
