Overview

Background & Policy context

The EFFISES project is based upon the patented Air Supported Vessel (ASV) technology, the IPR of Effect Ships International AS, the mother company of SES Europe AS, the project initiator and project coordinator.

Objectives

To develop and prove feasibility of a new generation Energy Efficient Safe Innovative Fast Ships and Vessels, based upon the ASV technology principles.  Air support for 40 m designs up to 85% for 125 m designs approx 50%.

Methodology

Design development leading to two brand new EFFISES hull forms, suitable primarily as a 40 m and up to 70 knots fast passenger only ferry, and a 125 m and up to 60 knots fast express cargo / RORO/ROPAX type of fast vessel. Both vessels were ASV catamarans. Deigns tank tested at SSPA Sweden in calm waters and in waves. Highly successful results documented. Two large operational and manned prototypes then developed and tested, confirming the tank testing results. Testing outside Athens in the Med, on the Danube and in Scandinavian waters. Test results with the 10 m manned models verified by National Technical University of Athens, in collaboration with SSPA Sweden.

Results

40 m ASV applications: High speed efficiency improvements of up to 40%. Market leading load carrying capability and high speed transport efficiency. Excellent motion aspects. 125 m ASV applications: High speed efficiency improvements of up to 20%. Market leading load carrying capability and transport efficiency. Soft motion ride qualities and low wake wash. A following up 20 m fully operational ASV mono test vessel will go in the waters in September 2009.

Technical Implications

Demonstrated feasibility of both designs. Suggested alternative sin off designs. In the following up of the project also proven feasibility and integration of Water Jet propulsion and ASV hulls. Demonstrated very low wake wash.

Policy implications

Environmental friendly new fast vessel solutions, usable for both inshore and offshore applications.
