Overview
With more than eight million passengers, one comma two million vehicles and up to three hundred thousand trucks a year, the Gulf of Finland is one of the busiest intersections and sea areas in the region. Around thirty thousand weekly road users travel between Estonia and Finland each year. According to various estimates, the number of passengers and freight may increase significantly in the coming years.
It has not yet been decided whether alternatives to crossing the Gulf should be bridges or tunnels and factors such as technical, environmental and visual impacts and the cost- effectiveness of each solution should be further assessed before making a decision. In the case of financing, the new Estonia - Finland connection may be opened at the earliest after 2035.
The project and consultations are designed to seek the views of the public and stakeholders on a possible new way to cross the Gulf.
Topics for discussion include:
- Support for new opportunities to cross the Gulf;
- Areas which are interested to use the new opportunity to cross the Gulf to better understand where goods or public transport flows are going
The study covers evaluation of transport demand from a wide catchment area and the project will create alternative transport approaches and a visionary document with strategic projects for the development.
