Overview
Background & policy context:
The Action is part of a global project which foresees the construction of 9 Ultra-Large-Container-Vessels (ULCV) with a capacity of 22,000 TEU each equipped with LNG propulsion. The ULCVs will call 8 TEN-T Core Ports. The LNG supply of 9 ULCVs requires the construction of a very large LNG bunkering vessel.
Objectives:
The Action's overall objective is to promote the decarbonisation of maritime transport by deployment of a fit-to-purpose large scale LNG bunkering strategy.
The specific objectives of the Action are:
- to prepare reliable, efficient and safe ultra-large-scale LNG supply for the maritime operators in the Core Ports of Rotterdam, Le Havre and Dunkerque. This objective will be met through the construction and deployment of an innovative LNG bunkering vessel with a capacity of 18,600 m3 and the preparation of LNG bunkering procedures including all logistic requirements and steps ensuring the LNG supply for the commercial operations of the customers;
- to develop in the Port of Dunkerque suitable capacities to offer small-scale LNG bunkering services. The objective will be achieved through the adaptation of the existing jetty to allow also the provision of LNG loading and bunkering services to small-scale LNG ships, and the construction of a new jetty that is dedicated for small-scale LNG operations.
