Overview

Background & Policy context

Economically viable transport services on the Danube are dependent on stable
fairway conditions. The proposed action is located along the Danube pre-identified
section of the Rhine-Danube Corridor.

It aims to accelerate the removal of bottlenecks, upgrade the Danube to achieve stable navigation conditions, procure the necessary equipment to carry out pilots for hydrological services and elaborate coordinated national road maps. Fairway Danube consists of 7 actions taking place in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. These Actions will be coordinated by Austria. It is part of the Global Project on the implementation of the Danube Master Plan signed by all riparian Danube countries (except Hungary) in December 2014.

It consists of studies, investigations and pilot actions to collect the necessary information allowing the identification of physical bottlenecks to be removed at a later stage.

Objectives

The proposed action aims to identify the necessary future works to remove existing bottlenecks in all the countries of the Danube pre-identified section. The action's maturity is good as political commitment is ensured at national and Corridor levels. Its impact is also good as it will foster competitiveness of inland navigation. The quality of the proposal is good as the activities are clearly described, realistic and consistent.
