Overview

Background & policy context:

In various European research projects in the field of traffic telematics, capturing Floating Car Data (FCD) were tested and have proven to be feasible. Floating Car Data (FCD) is automatically collected data on the traffic conditions based on the movement of individual vehicles in traffic. In Switzerland there is a strong effort to introduce a system for collecting FCD.

Objectives:

The aims of the project are:

Examining the applicability of FCD, assessing the different entry types, and developing an implementation concept for FCD in transport planning.

The following research questions will be answered:

  • Existing approaches for the detection of FCD and the techniques used for this purpose are put together and are relative to examine suitability for transport planning.
  • The need for data on traffic conditions and traffic behaviour in the traffic planning needs to be clarified.
  • Where necessary, new approaches for the detection of FCD must be developed that are tailored optimally to both the range of current traffic information as well as traffic planning.
  • There are proposals (objectives, conditions, requirements, possible system architectures, etc.) for the establishment of a system for capturing and FCD-up for transport planning in Switzerland to work.
