Overview

Background & Policy context

A major challenge of individual mobility is the mitigation of negative environmental effects. Tightening of ecological and legislative boundary conditions leads to the development of new technologies in the field of public transport. City busses equipped with alternative propulsion systems show potential of reducing greenhouse gas, pollutants- and noise-emissions. Current operations of hybrid city busses show fuel consumption reduction potentials of up to 20 %. With the introduction of plug-in hybrid and full electric vehicles, further savings are expected due to the increasing share of electric energy taken from the grid.

Objectives

Research goals are:

  • Measurement of energy consumption and noise emissions of the vehicles
  • Economic and ecologic comparison with conventionally propelled vehicles
  • Acceptance test of the new technologies
  • Analysis of optimization potentials in design and operation of the system

Results are extrapolated on further bus lines and public transport networks.

Methodology

Within the scope of the research project HELD, daily operation of three Plug-In Hybrid and three full electric busses in the city of Hamburg is scientifically investigated. The vehicle high voltage battery is charged at the start- and end station of the bus line. For this purpose, a charging infrastructure providing a power of up to 300 kW is erected.
