Overview

Background & policy context:

Technology markets increasingly demand for modular and cost-efficient solutions, which integrate products and systems that are not part of scope of services of the main equipment provider. Among other applications this holds true for airport management and control systems. Siemens however follows the strategic objective to advance in research and development of surface movement and control systems to improve its reputation as a systems integrator. Strategic partnerships with experts are necessary to reach this goal within the next few years.

Objectives:

Implementing a cost-efficient surface movement and control systems is the main objective of the project. The position of the rolling aircrafts is tracked by sensors that are integrated in the navigation lights of the airfield and transmitted to the control system. This represents the foundation to detect barriers on the taxiway and to inform all involved. A fast powerline-based communication system is able to communicate all the necessary information.

Methodology:

Siemens AG worked on the following tasks:

  • Kick-off and technology workshop
  • Market survey and external specification
  • AGL development
  • Sensor development
  • AGLAS research and development
  • Integration AFL
  • Conflict prediction and routing development
  • Pilot tests
