Innovative and digital bike storage solutions in urban nodes for efficient passenger transfer and last-mile connections
Overview
Background & policy context:
The Action is part of a Global Project which plans to increase the capacity of the bike-parking areas near 47 railway stations in the Netherlands till 2030 and optimise their utilisation.
To complement this initiative, measures were agreed such as the piloting and roll-out of innovative, digital solutions to more efficiently and effectively use the available bike storage capacity.
Objectives:
The Action aims at implementing various innovative, digital and telematics orientated measures to make bike parking near train-stations and other major public transport hubs more efficient and effective.
Methodology:
The focus is on the introduction of new digital services and products, such as:
- effective enforcement and optimised occupancy (HBF Handhaven en Benutten Fietsenstallingen) systems in all bike storage locations;
- dynamic cycle parking guidance/direction system along the cycle lanes towards the cycle parking facilities;
- automatic checking in and out by means of chips placed on the bike, and 'fast lane' in and out check zones;
- improved 'last mile' part of cycle routes leading to cycle parking facilities including automated self-service registration and payment system.
The geographical scope of the Action is the urban nodes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
