Overview

Background & Policy context

The engineer working on the development of transportation networks and infrastructure to meet an increasing demand for mobility (economic boom, rising population and standards of living, etc.) must ensure that these are efficient, safe, economical and environmentally friendly. These stringent conditions cannot be satisfied without an interdisciplinary approach and especially they require the consultation of an ecologist for matters concerning the protection of fauna.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are:

  • To supply the technical and scientific bases allowing to take into account interactions between the networks of the fauna and the ways of traffic
  • To describe interdisciplinary methodologies for the elaboration of projects
  • To publish information intended for the civil engineers and ecologists

Results

The plan of measures is developed by the engineer and the ecologist together on the basis of the concept of the future ecological networks. Its aims must be the safety of road users, the protection of the fauna and a high efficiency/cost ratio. This last can be achieved to some extent by constructing crossing-ways for the fauna which are polyvalent and by integrating them into the landscape by arrangements stretching beyond the limits of the road.
