Overview

Background & Policy context

The majority of woodlands forming part of the trunk road estate have been planted over the last 40 years and are generally poorly developed in terms of ground flora. The Highways Agency Biodiversity Action Plan launched in March 2002 contains an action to enhance the nature conservation value of these existing woodlands.

Objectives

The main objectives of this project are to determine the potential for, together with practical measures to achieve, the establishment and maintenance of a diverse and appropriate ground flora to existing woodland planting alongside motorways and trunk roads.
