Overview

Background & Policy context

'Logistica e trasporti per i sistemi produttivi locali: metodi e modelli applicati alla realtà produttiva del nord-est padano' is a general study of some regional productive systems and their relations with the transport system (organization, performances, direct and indirect costs). It therefore deals with the examination and development of some typical logistic chains of the productive organization of the Italian North-East.

In the short-term, the project was aimed at identifying instruments and methodologies for the Guidelines of the 'Logistics Regional Plan', verifying and calibrating the results on real cases.

The project was not a simple methodological development of models and instruments, but on the contrary an experimental research able to verify the procedures through concrete surveys and then to give some 'general' answers, applicable and verified on real cases.

Objectives

The research was aimed at providing a clear qualitative representation of some characteristic productive chains of the Italian North-East, which produce significant impacts on the transport system, identifying for any of these the critical states and prefiguring the possible interventions to mitigate them

Results

The starting point was the specification of possible ways of intervention, which could support at the same time the flexibility of the system (in terms of production and consumption), its rationalization and the control of its total impacts (in terms of social and environmental quality). The objective here was therefore to characterize the instruments to accomplish political choices in the transport's logistics.

Not a secondary result of the research was the study of the costs perceived by the customers of the freight transport, with the aim of being able to calculate modal choice functions, which could represent effectively the present and future division between the alternative transport systems (evaluation of the weight of the 'variable of performance' and the efficiency in the modal choice) and in particular to be a planning instrument in order to stimulate the sustainable transport systems (from both an environmental and energetical point of view).

Consequently, the activities regarded the analysis of some production and logistical processes in four different areas, with the aim of reconstructing the complete chain of the transport 'production - commercialization - consumption'.
These areas were:

  • the district of the 'classic shoe of the Coast of the Brenta'
  • the district of the 'marble of the province of Verona'
  • the district of the 'modern furniture of the province of Treviso'
  • the district of the 'mechanics of Vicenza'
