Modernisation of the railway section Sofia - Elin Pelin
Overview
Background & policy context:
The Sofia-Elin Pelin railway section, located on the Orient/East Mediterranean TEN-T Core Network Corridor, represents a bottleneck since it does not meet the requirements for passenger and freight transport users/operators in terms of speed/travel time, interoperability, safety and security.
Objectives:
This action covers studies and works for the modernisation of the railway section Sofia-Elin Pelin, part of the railway line Sofia-Plovdiv. It is part of a global project for the modernisation of the entire Sofia-Plovdiv section.
Methodology:
The action includes interalia, detailed design for the modernisation of the railway line, land acquisition, archaeological monitoring, construction works, and project management.
The action will contribute to the interoperability of the Corridor, consequently increasing service quality, safety and security. It will also reduce congestion and have a positive effect on modal split by enhancing the efficiency and attractiveness of the railway.
