Overview

Background & policy context:

Requirement to create operating guidelines for public transport, conformable with awareness of necessity of transit routes optimalisation.

Objectives:

Develop methodology to elaborate operating guidelines for public transport in accordance with its characteristics.

Methodology shall ensure a minimum of disturbances to motorised vehicles and slow traffic (bicycles and pedestrians).

Methodology:

In the first part of the project the (urban) highway is analysed as a transportation facility serving many modes i.e. public transport (bus and light rail), motorised vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians (slow traffic). The factors affecting quality of service of each mode are characterised as well as the physical conditions of the highway with influence on the traffic conditions. By analysing examples of highways with multimodal service and the results of international research a methodology are developed to elaborate operating guidelines for public transport in accordance with its characteristics and which ensure a minimum of disturbances to motorised vehicles and slow traffic (multimodal coordination). The definition and use of the multimodal level of service concept is part of this methodology.
