Overview

Background & policy context:

The existing single tube Karavanke Tunnel is part of Comprehensive Road Network and connects Slovenian A2 motorway with Austrian A11 motorway. It represents a major cross-border bottleneck due to frequent congestions caused by the limited capacity of the tunnel. The Action is part of a Global Project for the construction of the second tube and modernisation of the existing tube in order to increase the capacity and safety of the Karavanke Tunnel.

Objectives:

The Action concerns studies covering:

  • geological/geotechnical/hydro-geological surveys
  • elaboration of design for building permit
  • elaboration of executive design
  • expert and consulting services

Methodology:

The outcomes of the Action will directly lead to building permit acquisition and commencement of public procurement procedure for the construction works, thus contributing to continuation of the Global Project.

The Global Project is implemented in close cooperation between Austria and Slovenia based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2015. The design studies for development of the Austrian part of the Karavanke Tunnel are subject to Action 2014-AT-TA-0156-S.
