The overall project objective is to support the development of a transport corridor between the Baltic and Barents region. The corridor would open up new transport opportunities for mining companies and other companies as well as a connection to the northern sea routes. It would also increase employment in the region considerably, and develop cross-border cooperation in many sectors.

Goals of the preliminary project:

• Obtain a realistic picture of the international and national grounds that may support construction of a railway from Rovaniemi to Kirkkoniemi.
• Compare differences between and development thresholds of road transports and railway transports.
• Identify necessary planning processes and funding models.
• Increase awareness of the railway project at the national level in both Finland and Norway
