Overview
The background to this project is the EU's River Information Services (RIS) Directive, relating to harmonised RIS on inland waterways. RIS is aimed at supporting traffic and transport management in inland navigation, including interfaces with other transport modes.
The research work carried out in the study was based on previous works performed on this field but the main inputs were derived from international projects such as INDRIS and COMPRIS.
The study's objective was to provide the base for preparing the application of a River Information Services (RIS) system for the Slovak inland waterway system. For this purpose, the main goal of the study was to determine a strategy of building up a test centre for RIS using known European standards for all relevant technologies which are necessary for the implementation of the Pan-European RIS, especially regarding Inland-AIS, Inland-ECDIS and international and national exchange of traffic and transport management data.
The study analysed the situation in the Slovak Republic and proposed the structure of a test centre for RIS in Slovakia. The costs of such a centre were also identified. The study has taken into account not only the conditions contained in the forthcoming EU RIS Directive and the policies of other multi-national bodies, such as CCNR (Central Commission for the Navigation on the Rhine), DC (Danube Commission) and PIANC, but the geographical and administrative prerequisites in the Slovak Republic too.

Results
The study analysed the situation in the Slovak Republic and proposed the structure of a test centre for RIS in Slovakia. The costs of such a centre were identified as well. The study has taken into account not only the conditions contained in the forthcoming EU RIS Directive and the policies of other multi-national bodies, such as CCNR, DC and PIANC but the geographical and administrative prerequisites in the Slovak Republic too.
Policy implications
The study provides the base for the implementation of the forthcomming RIS Directive on the inland waterway system in Slovakia. The EU RIS will define the conditions and deadlines for implementation.
