Overview

Objectives

SOPHYA aimed to improve the performance in rough seas of planing hull boats.

Methodology

The project experimented with new forecasting techniques that included the optimisation and measurement of a scale model. The performance was also tested to improve sea kindliness, safety and energy performance of the planing hulls on waves.

Results

In the project, the following were used, analysed and further developed:
- Advanced and efficient open source fluid dynamics simulation (CFD) tools;
- Free Form Deformation techniques for the high-level management of the geometric variations of the hulls;
- Forecast and retrospective data of wave motion in the real test areas;
- Tools for analysis and correlation of the data measured in the tank and in the real world.
