Overview
Background & policy context:
Aviation is of great importance to Sweden’s economy and competitiveness. It plays an important role in helping to meet the needs of people and the business sector for long-distance domestic and international travel and transport. Aviation is a part of the transport system, which means that it must develop in collaboration with other modes of transport to create an efficient and sustainable transport system. The aviation strategy will help make Sweden a socially, environmentally and economically more sustainable society.
Objectives:
The objectives of the strategy are:
- The state-owned national basic infrastructure of airports will be the foundation of an efficient and sustainable aviation transport system, and ensure essential interregional and international accessibility.
- A review of Swedish airports should be carried out for the purpose of clarifying the State’s responsibility and role as support provider to non-state-owned airports.
- Sustainable conditions for state aid to non-state-owned airports will be sought, while increased opportunities for streamlining and using new technologies should be able to reduce the need for public support to airports in the long term
