Overview

Background & policy context:

The Motorways of the Sea link between the TEN-T core Port of Naantali (Finland) and the comprehensive Port of Kapellskär (Sweden) is an important freight and passenger (RoPax) transport link in Northern Europe. It connects the Southwest of Finland and Eastern Sweden and it is linked to the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T core network corridor via the Port of Naantali.

Objectives:

The Action is part of the Global Project and its main objective is to upgrade the link and enable the ports to serve the new vessels that will be deployed from 2023.

The specific objectives of the Action are:

  1. Environmental upgrade of the link i.e. reduction of the environmental impact of the vessels and port operations by installing onshore-power supply (OPS) facilities in both ports.
  2. Increase the safety and efficiency of the vessels and port operations by implementing the auto-mooring systems and the terminal upgrades in both ports.

The Action will result in an upgraded link ready to accommodate large vessels, respond to the increase in transport capacity as well as in reduced environmental impact, increased safety and efficiency of the port operations.
