This issue features a selection of short articles discussing the benefits and challenges of automation and technology advances across a range of transport modes.

The costs and benefits of automation for private and commercial vehicles

An analysis of the total cost of ownership found that automation provided a clear benefit to commercial operations. High-income households will benefit more compared to other private car users due to longer driving distances and perceived value of time, which can be used more productively throughout full automation.

This study explored a new approach to traffic-flow and system management in the presence of highly automated and connected vehicles. It highlights the crucial role of transport authorities in managing transport automation in real time and the need for a central coordination system.

An analysis of the evolution of the main communication technologies deployed in railways identified standardisation, interoperability, scalability, energy efficiency and cyber security as key challenges. This study used publicly available information, proprietary data and horizon scanning to examine future maritime technologies. It identified key transformational technologies in the commercial shipping, naval and ocean space sectors by 2030.
