Horizon 2020 was the EU's research and innovation funding programme from 2014 to 2020. An evaluation published on 29 January 2024 highlights the success and impact of the programme, particularly in building an EU society and economy that is rooted in knowledge and innovation. It was found that each euro in costs linked to the programme will ultimately bring five euros in benefits to EU citizens by 2040. 

The programme funded innovations across a range of fields, including transport-specific decarbonisation solutions such as hydrogen-fuelled modes. 

The evaluation also highlights key lessons learned and areas for improvement.
