Overview

Background & policy context:

The Highways Agency was approached by Police who voiced concerns over the number of accidents on the network that they perceived involved vehicles driving too close together.

If the perceived accident problem could be established by identifying reliable data, and deterrent and enforcement techniques could be developed, this project had the potential to contribute to a reduction in the number of accidents involving vehicles travelling too close to the vehicle in front.

Objectives:

To establish the scale of any accident problem involving close following vehicles, to identify deterrent and enforcement techniques used in other countries, and to devise trials of such techniques for use on motorways and trunk roads.

This project investigated road accident data to establish the scale of any accident problem on the motorway and trunk road network involving close following vehicles.
