Overview

Background & Policy context

Commercial vehicles such as excavators, cranes and construction machinery are nowadays used in numerous sectors of the economy. However, they are responsible for a large number of serious accidents, as the visibility of the driver is often restricted due to their design. Due to the variety and complexity of their fields of application, effective security measures are very difficult to implement.

Objectives

The project safeguARd therefore aims to develop an assistance system for people who drive commercial vehicles. It detects dangerous situations at an early stage, draws the user's attention to the danger and intervenes actively in the final instance in the control of the machine - for example, to initiate an emergency stop. The system is modular and flexible according to the principle "Design for all" and can therefore be used in various commercial vehicles.

Methodology

The interaction of cameras and other sensors allows to record and analyse the environment of the commercial vehicle. Based on this analysis, dangerous situations can be identified and calculated in advance on the basis of the current or intended movement of the vehicle. Augmented reality technologies are used to present the virtual situation picture and the respective hazard situations in a clear and concise manner.
